As already mentioned medical assistants can specialize in any branch of medicine. They could be in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Medical assistants are not trained to provide care like doctors, but have enough training to pass down instruction from physicians and nurse practitioners to patients on how to take medication or order refills for patients who have run out of medication that still has refills.
The course work for medical assisting can be completed in 24 months and most community colleges, universities and technical schools have such training facilities. Schools that have it, must have gotten accreditation from the responsible agencies to run a medical assisting program.
